Green Fruit Smoothie Kind of Morning

img_5319Everyone in the family started their morning off with a green fruit smoothie this morning. Every small change helps, right? I make these smoothies with green apples, pineapples, kale, broccoli, nonfat Greek yogurt and milk. As soon as our DoTerra Terrazyme arrives, I will also be adding that into the mix to help us get the most nutritional value from our foods. Terrazymes really help you digest processed foods, so it might be better to add these to the lunch time smoothie. I make my smoothie at lunch with water instead of the milk or yogurt, so it’s a more fat free option. I also load it up with more kale and spinach and less fruit.

What a difference a year makes! It’s hard to believe that last year at this time Andy and I were still smoking and needing more exercise and a better diet. This year we’ve quit smoking; we’re trying to exercise more; we’re trying to eat better as a family. We’re trying to lose weight and get into shape. Not in my wildest dreams did I think last year that I would be sitting here blogging about taking a more active responsibility for the family’s health. I would have laughed for a solid hour if you would have told me that we’d be eating green fruit smoothies for breakfast and with lunch.

Yet here we are taking this journey towards a more healthy lifestyle. I’ll confess that change is hard, but we did not want to try some kind of fad diets or anything that might be unhealthy in the long run. We instead are making small changes that build as they go. The fruit smoothies with the kale, spinach or broccoli added are great examples of small changes that build as you go. At first, I just made fruit smoothies with plain yogurt and honey. I then switched to vanilla flavored yogurt. With the vanilla yogurt, you really can not taste the veggies, and I use frozen veggies so the smoothies are nice and frozen.

Now, here’s where I need to stop for a second to check myself and make sure that that’s really me talking because we used to be so unhealthy. We are still so unhealthy; we’re just trying to change our bad habits. Of course, we have years of smoking to overcome. It’s really hard to live in Colorado and be unhealthy because it is so easy to be outside. Everywhere you go you get a beautiful view and being outside is way better than being trapped indoors. Coloradans like to be outside more than even Southerners do. I love it, and I love getting my family more healthy. Right now, I need to go throw a pork shoulder roast into the crockpot.
